I would have mentioned many more trilogies too, but she's only talking about ones that were all helmed by the same director, so among those you mentioned, only Spider-Man would qualify (1 was great, 2 was ok, 3 was horrific).

I was going to leave a comment but everyone's viciousness regarding this post is a bit scary. However, I am not a smart person so I throw myself into the fray.

I will say that Two Towers provides a nice segway into the brillance that is Return of the King and Pirates could have stopped with the first but greed and the studios need to beat us over the head with superfluous merchandise won out over sense. Also, there is a tiny bit of genious hidden in Back To The Future 2 when they have to go back to the 60's to save themselves again, but not enough to make up for the ridiculous future gadgets (except for the hoverboard... totally want one of those.) And Die Hard With A Vengence is just all kinds of awesome since Jeremy Irons makes a kick-ass German villan.

You make a strong case with Godfather 2, which is clearly the best of the 3. I couldn't possibly argue with you on this statement.
Then you mention The Two Towers, which was nerdy goodness to be sure, but it's debatable if it's the best of the 3. At worst, it's second best. You should have stopped there because then your theory goes to hell in a handbasket when you try to run with Back To The Future 2.

Not only was it bad, it's one of the worst sequels in movie history. I'd put it on par with Speed 2: Collision Course (not a trilogy, no, but it's a perfect example of my next point). It's not a movie at all, but a road to nowhere. Gadgets are great, but there's no story here. This is the problem with most sequels, and virtually every "2nd" movie in a trilogy. They made a good to great first film, the studio wants more, they throw shit tons of lettuce at them, so they make another. They often start shooting without a finished script. Die Hard 2? Really? You don't even believe that shit yourself, as evidenced by the fact that you misappropriated a quote from Die Hard to your argument that Die Harder (yes, really) was superior. Pirates of the Carribean 2 was shit, pure, unadulterated, shit. They made a 3 hour movie about pirates, starring Johhny Depp, and it had no charm, no humor, and no heart. It was like the actors didn't even know the cameras were rolling half the time. I swear there's a scene with Knightley in the background thumbing away on her Blackberry. Bad movie, bad theory, but you're a good girl just the same.

I could list 10 examples that further disprove your theory, but it's superfluous, since 1) you already did it yourself, and 2) I believe you're referring specifically to trilogies that had the same director for all 3 films.

My vote's with you on Die Hard 2 but second the crackhead sentiment as to Back to the Future 2. Original was classic and the two sequels are fucking abominations. Fine, sweet hoverboard, but nothing forgives the nightmare plot about Biff and the sportsbook and the hideously over-the-top performances. One of those sequels that almost ruins the original.

Your Godfather II take, though, was also spot on. Also vote for Evil Dead 2.
